Writing to learn, part 3

I started a series of posts called Writing to learn to explore the meaning of some interesting words and concepts. My goal is to internalize the words and gain mastery of the English language in the process. In this part three of the Writing to learn series, I bring you more words that draw my attention.

  • Resilience. The ability to be happy, successful, etc. again after something difficult or bad has happened. 2- The ability of a substance to return to its usual shape after being bent, stretched or pressed. 3- The ability to return quickly to a previous good condition after problems.
  • Scenario. A description of possible actions or events in the future. 2- One of possible several situations that might exist in the future. 3- A written plan of the characters and events in a play or film.
  • Dissociation. The fact of being separate from and not related to something else. 2- The action of separating yourself, or considering yourself to be separate, from something or someone.
  • Bribe. To try and make someone do something for you by giving them money, presents, or something else they want. 2- Money or a present that you give to someone so that they will do something for you, usually something dishonest. 3- To give someone money or something else of value, often illegally, to persuade that person to do something you want.
  • Incentive. Something that encourages a person to do something.
  • Disincentive. Something that makes people not want to do something or not work hard. 2- Something that makes and organization or a person less willing to do something.
  • Incentivize. To make someone want to do something. 2- To make someone want to do something, such as to buy something or to do work, specially by offering prices or rewards.
  • Event. Anything that happens, especially something important or unusual. 2- An event is also one particular group of outcomes among all possible outcomes when experimenting with probability. 3- An activity that is planned for a special purpose and usually involves a lot of people, for example, a meeting, party, trade show or conference.
  • Small talk. Conversation about things that are not important, often between people that do not know each other well. 2- Polite conversation about things that are not important, often between people who are meeting for the first time.
  • Offer. To ask someone if they would like to have something or if they would like you to do something. 2- To provide or supply something. 3- The reduction in the usual price of something, usually for a short period. 4- To say that you will pay a particular amount of money for something. 5- An amount of money that someone is willing to pay for something.
  • Trigger. A part of a gun that causes the gun to fire when pressed. 2- An event or situation, etc. that causes something to start. 3- To cause something to start. 4- Something that causes someone to feel upset and frightened because they are made to remember something bad that has happened in the past. 5- To cause a strong emotional reaction of fear, shock, anger, or worry in someone, especially because they are made to remember something bad that happened in the past.
  • Drip. If a liquid drips, it falls in drops, or you make it fall in drops. 2- To produce drops of liquids.
  • Playback. The act of playing a recording again in order to hear or see something again. 2- The act of listening or watching something that was previously recorded.
  • Closure. The fact of a business, organization, etc. stop operating. 2- The process of ending a debate in a parliament, so there can be a vote. 3- The feeling or act of bringing something bad to an end. 4- The feeling or act of bringing an unpleasant situation, time, or experience to an end, so that you are able to start new activities.
  • Scrutiny. The careful and detailed examination of something in order to get information about it. 2- The careful and detailed examination of something.
  • Certainty. Something that can not be doubted. 2- The state of being completely confident or having no doubt about something. 3- Something that is very likely to happen. 4- The sure knowledge that something is true. 5- Something that has no possibility of any other result; something that you know will happen in a particular way.
  • Scoreboard. A large board in which the score of a game is shown.
  • Vulnerability. The quality of being vulnerable (able to be easily hurt, influenced or attacked) or something that is vulnerable.
  • Tenant. A person that pays rent for the use of land or a building. 2- A person or organization that rents a building or land and pays rent to its owner.
  • Landlord. A person or organization that owns a building or an area of land and is paid by other people for the use of it.
  • Locus. The place where something happens or the central area of interest of something being discussed.
  • Control. To order, limit, or rule something, or someone’s actions or behaviour. 2- A switch or device used to operate a machine such as a vehicle. 3- The ability of power to decide or strongly influence the particular way in which something will happen or someone will behave, or the condition of having such ability or power. 4- To own the most shares in a company and be the main owner. 5- To limit the amount by which something is allowed to change, develop or increase. 6- To be in charge or something or someone and have the power to make decisions relating to them. 7- In an experiment, an object or system that is not changed so that you can compare it with similar objects or systems that are intentionally changed.
  • Trust. To believe that someone is good and honest and will not harm you, or that something is safe and reliable. 2- To hope and expect that something is true. 3- To have confidence in something or to believe in someone. 4- A legal arrangement in which a person or organization control property or money for another person or organization.
  • Executive. Someone in a high position, especially a business, who makes decisions and puts them into action. 2- A group of people who run a business or organization. 3- Relating to making decisions and managing businesses, or suitable for people with important jobs in business.
  • Need. To have to have something, or want something very much. 2- A feeling or state of strongly wanting something. 3- The state of having to have something that you do not have, especially something that you must have so that you can have a satisfactory life. 4- The state of being necessary. 5- If you say that someone of something needs something else, you mean that they should have it, or would get an advantage from it.
  • Terrorism. (threats of) violent actions for political purposes. 2- The use of intentional violence and fear to achieve political or ideological claims.
  • Intelligence. The ability to learn, understand and make judgements or have opinions that are based on reason. 2- The ability to learn and understand things easily and quickly. 3- Secret information about the government of other countries, especially enemy governments, or a group of people who collect and deal with this information.
  • Hindsight. The ability to understand an event or situation only after it has happened. 2- The ability to understand, after something has happened, why or how it was done and how it might have been done better.
  • Foresight. The ability to judge correctly what is going to happen in the future and plan your actions based on this knowledge. 2- The ability to judge correctly what is going to happen.
  • Insight. (the ability to have) a clear, deep, and sometimes sudden understanding of a complicated problem or situation.
  • Sight. The ability to see. 2- Something that is in someones’s view. 3- To suddenly see something or someone. 4- A part of a gun or other device through which you look to help you aim at something.
  • Fore. (Specially on ships) Towards or in the front. 2- A noticeable or public position. 3- Used in golf to warm people that a ball is traveling through the air.
  • Hind. At the back of an animal’s body. 2- A female deer, especially a red deer.
  • Hint. Something that you say or do that shows what you think or want, usually in a way that is not direct. 2- A piece of advice that helps you to do something. 3- A tiny amount of something.
  • Widow. A woman whose husband or wife has died and who has not married again. 2- If someone has been widowed, their husband or wife has died.
  • Infamous. Famous for something considered bad. 2- Well known for something bad, notorious.
  • Popularity. The fact that something or someone is liked, enjoyed, or supported by many people.
  • Popular. Liked, enjoyed or supported by many people. 2- For or involving ordinary people rather than experts or very educated people.
  • Fame. The state of being known or recognized by many people because of your achievements, skills, etc. 2- The state of being known for having or doing something important.
  • Determination. The ability to continue trying to do something, although it is very difficult. 2- The process of finding something out. 3- The process of controlling, influencing or deciding something.
  • Stratification. The fact that the different parts of something exist in or have been arranged into separate groups.
  • Wealth. A large amount of money or possessions that someone has. 2- A large amount of something good.
  • Fortune. A large amount of money, goods, property, etc. 2- Chance and the way it affects your life. 3- The set of good and bad events that happens to you and the effect they have on your life.
  • Organization. A group of people who work together in an organized way for a shared purpose. 2- The planning of an activity or event. 3- The way in which something is done or arranged.
  • Whereabouts. The place where a person or thing is. 2- In what part or area.
  • Personal. Relating or belonging to a single or particular person rather than a group or an organization. 2- Private or relating to someone’s private life. 3- Relating to your body or appearance.
  • Agenda. A list of matters to be discussed at a meeting. 2- A list of aims or possible future achievements. 3- An agenda is a particular program of action, often one that is not directly expressed. 4- The things that a person or organization considers to be important or wants to solve or achieve, or their reasons for wanting to do something.
  • Proficient. Skilled and experienced. 2- Very skilled and experienced at something.
  • Power. Ability to control people and events. 2- The amount of political control a person of group has in a country. 3- Strength. 4- An official or legal right to do something. 5- Electricity, especially when considering its use or production. 6- A natural skills or ability to do something. 7- A person, organization or country that has control over others, often because of wealth, importance or great military strength. 8- The number of times a number is multiplied by itself.
  • Influence. The ability to have an effect on people or things, or a person or thing that is able to do this. 2- To affect or change how someone or something develops, behaves or thinks. 3- To cause someone to change a behavior, belief, opinion, or to cause something to be changed.
  • Politics. The activities of the government, members of law-making organizations, or people who try to influence the way a country is governed. 2- The job of holding a position of power in the government. 3- The study of the ways in which a country is governed. 4- The relationships between a group or organization that allow particular people to have power over others. 5- A person’s political opinions. 6- Activities that are related to getting or keeping power within a particular company, organization, etc.
  • Govern. To control and direct the public business or a country, city group of people, etc. 2- To have a controlling influence on something.
  • Government. The group of people who officially control a country. 2- The system used for controlling a country, city, group of people, etc. 3- An organization that officially manages and controls a country or region, creating laws, collecting taxes, providing public services, etc.
  • Relationship. The way in which to things are connected. 2- The way in which to people feel and behave toward each other. 3- A close romantic friendship between two people, often a sexual one.
  • Interest. The feeling of wanting to give your attention to something or wanting to be involved with and to discover more about something. 2- Your interests are the activities you enjoy doing and the subjects that you like to spend time learning about. 3- Something that brings advantages to or affects someone or something. 4- Money that is charged by a bank or other organization for borrowing money.
  • Motive. A reason for doing something. 2- (a power of force) causing movement or action.

Most of those words have multiple definitions. I focused on the ones that interested me and most likely oversimplified some definitions to keep this piece short. Additionally, I borrowed most of the definitions from the Cambridge Dictionary.
